According to state media reports this week, Vietnam is set to make identity verification mandatory for social media users as a way to combat online fraud.
Under the Telecommunications Law Amendment, to be released by the end of this year, law enforcement agencies will be able to locate offenders who use social media platforms to commit crimes, as per the state-run newspaper Voice of Vietnam.
Information deputy minister Nguyen Thanh Lam was quoted by local media as saying that although there are times when authorities can identify social media users who violate laws, they are unable to track them down due to the use of cross-border applications by these criminals.
He further stated that unverified accounts, regardless of whether they are on local or foreign platforms like Facebook, TikTok, or YouTube, will be addressed. The specifics of the regulation have not yet been disclosed and will require the approval of Vietnam’s lawmakers.
