The race for the top four is left wide open after West Ham’s defeat to Manchester United, with the only goal of the match resulting from a David de Gea error.
Despite a David de Gea howler gifting West Ham the only goal of the game, they still managed to secure a deserved win over Manchester United, leaving the race for the top four wide open. In the first half, Said Benrahma’s hurried effort from the edge of the area appeared to be a routine save, but the goalkeeper somehow let the ball slip out of his grasp and into the near post.
Manchester United are currently in fourth place with 63 points after 34 games, just one point ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand over them. Meanwhile, West Ham are in 15th place with 37 points, seven points ahead of third-from-bottom Nottingham Forest.
Despite enjoying better chances in the opening half, Manchester United found themselves trailing after De Gea failed to keep out Benrahma’s tame bouncing shot, which nestled in the bottom corner despite the goalkeeper getting a strong hand to it. The visitors were also fortunate not to concede a penalty when Victor Lindelof moved his arm into the path of a ball across the box from Benrahma, but VAR decided not to award a penalty as the first half came to a close.
Early in the second half, De Gea somewhat redeemed himself with a superb reaction save to deny Tomas Soucek. However, he looked shaky again as Soucek scored with a header in the 73rd minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
In the second half, Marcus Rashford and substitute Anthony Martial both had shots on target that were saved by Lukasz Fabianski. Despite 10 minutes of stoppage time, Manchester United were unable to find a goal and suffered their second consecutive league defeat.
