A Brief History of Bayero University Kano (BUK)

Bayero University Kano has a rich history that dates back to its humble beginnings. Originally known as Ahmadu Bello College, it was established in 1960 and situated within the premises of the School for Arabic Studies (SAS) in the historic city of Kano. However, with the establishment of Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria in 1962, the college was renamed Abdullahi Bayero College.

In 1964, the college relocated to a temporary site at the old Kano Airport Hotel. It admitted its first batch of ten undergraduate students for a B.A. degree program offered by Ahmadu Bello University. This pioneer set successfully graduated in 1966, and the college continued to function as a faculty of Ahmadu Bello University until 1980.

Due to the temporary site being exposed to hostile fire during the Nigerian civil war, the college had to relocate to its present old campus situated near Kabuga and Dukawuya gates on the Kano-Gwarzo road. This move to the permanent site took place in 1980.

A significant milestone occurred in 1975 when Abdullahi Bayero College was elevated to the status of a University College. It gained the authority to award degrees on behalf of Ahmadu Bello University and was subsequently renamed Abdullahi Bayero University College. This new status also granted the institution its own Governing Council.

In 1977, all University Colleges across Nigeria were granted full-fledged university status by the Federal Government. As a result, Abdullahi Bayero University College became Bayero University, Kano (BUK) through the enactment of BUK Decree no 79 of 1979.

Dr. Mahmud Tukur, the Principal of the University College, served as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor from 1977 to 1978. He played a pivotal role in establishing the foundation and shaping the university as it exists today. Subsequently, several distinguished individuals have held the position of Vice-Chancellor at Bayero University Kano, including Prof. James O.C. Ezeilo (1978-79), Prof. Ibrahim H. Umar (1979-86), Prof. Dandatti Abdulkadir (1986-91), Prof. M. S. Zahraddeen (1991-95), Prof. B.B. Dambatta (1995-99), Prof. Musa Abdullahi (1999-2004), Prof. Danjuma A.
